"...but it is frustrating to not be able to find people who like to read what I do. I'm happy to listen to other people share their thoughts, but eyes glaze over when I do it."
This thread was inspired by Palmas post on the "Whos Books Are Better" thread.
What books do you like to read Palma? What books does everyone else like to read? I like all different kinds of books. Self help, cook books, bio and auto biographies, fiction, sci-fi, etc..... But mostly I prefer occult, documentary, non fiction, bio & autobio and my fave is CONSPIRACY / "speculation"!!! So many but off the top of my head some faves are Jim Keith, Joan D'Arc & Al Hidell. Some fave fiction authors are Clive Barker and Anne Rice. Poppy Z Brite. Anything by Robert Anton Wilson. There are still MANY books and authors I want to eventually read. Some of the beats I still havent gotten around to. More of the psychedelic "gurus." More Jean Genet. More Antero Ali & Christopher Hyatt. More Wayne Dyer and Caroline Myss too. : )

Re: What do you like to read?
Mon, September 15, 2008 - 10:52 PMAlong the lines of this topic, I was wondering if anyone else is like me.... wondering who else reads the same type of books you do... wouldn't it be fun to have theme parties by authors we love... like, are we all same age, politics, gender, income, education, etc?
I am an Anita Brookner fan, and while she is obviously an accomplished writer, I am sure her fans are few and far between around the world... but am I the only LA chicana who appreciates her or are there thousands more? it would be fun to know!

Re: What do you like to read?
Wed, September 17, 2008 - 12:45 AMMrabet, Chekhov, Bukowski, Coleman, Collier, Rey Rosa, Poe, Carter, Brautigan, Fante, Abe, Porter, Cave, Smith (Patty & H Allen), Don Marquis, de Sade, Aichinger, Thoreau, Oe, Sandburg, Adair, Alexie, Stabenow, Genet, Mishima, Banana... (we're talking non musical? - I mean I wouldn't want to leave 'em out, Weiss, Brouwer, etc...) ... hey, wait a minute, this is a trick question right? You know, I could type all night, really! I tend to read and enjoy most everything (word whore) with words myself sometimes, now to ask the opposite: What can't you stand?

Re: What do you like to read?
Thu, September 18, 2008 - 8:55 PMI read mostly everything now, but and particularly fond of fantasyand horror, es[ecially Vampire novels,
But like I said, I read all kinds of fiction and non-fiction.
Love: Janet Evanovich, Kim Harrison, Stephen King, Ann Rice, Dean Koonts, Peter Straub.
I enjoy, James Lee Burke, Nevada Barr .
I read, magazines, newspapers.
I like to hold the book in my hands. I hate reading for any length of time on line.
Even when I am doing research on line I often print it out. There is something about having it in your hand. -

Re: What do you like to read?
Tue, September 23, 2008 - 5:42 PMI went on /have been on ...a Dickens/Thackeray alternating jag. This can last forever. Otherwise I read quite a lot of other things, in the novel range. I like historical novels around 1720's, though bodice rippers, good lord no! I liked the instance of the fingerpost. I also like Ian Rankin, Henel Menkel? the depressed Swedish detective novel, I especially like neurobiology though not many novels of this ilk,. and not much in the horror range unless Dexter and something with more anatomical background is included.
I think the Dickens/Thackeray theme parties are pretty standard. Though I've never attended one, I'd really like to go as Dickens. or one of his characters, like Jonas Chuzzelwit, how awful would that be? -

Re: What do you like to read?
Tue, September 23, 2008 - 5:57 PMI also just read "Something to Tell You" by Hanif Kureshi, a favorite. And it was just fab. I'd like to go to a theme party dressed like him! Because I had read Buddha of Suburbia, I rented the DVD of the Brit Televised version, 1993, and I'd like to go to a theme party dressed like Naveen Andrews, and have his hair too! The book, Something To Tell You, has a bright yellow cover...something I must tell all the book lovers of this tribe...as it is a book lovers sort of thing.
Also, I guess, as a book lover, the Dickens Thackeray books evoke my deep love of...books. They
were printed in the mid and late 19th century, which is also such a trip. the paper, the binding, the printing. ...lovely. -

Re: What do you like to read?
Tue, September 23, 2008 - 11:58 PMI read a lot of essays and shot stories. I manage to read a novel here and there too. And I read poetry all the time as I love it. I read every day. If for a few minutes.
So, let me see, the things I most recently read are - reread Brief Interviews With Hideous Men by David Foster Wallace. Also read some delicious essays by Virginia Woolf. Been reading Carol Ann Duffy's poetry lately a lot. And the novel I read most recently was Howard's End by E.M. Forster. That was a case of rereading too. But the first time I read it I was too young to really grasp anything.
I believe I'm a modernist in the pomo times... :) Yeah, not really illustrated by all the authors mentioned above, but, generally, yes, I am completely enamored with modernism.

Re: What do you like to read?
Tue, September 30, 2008 - 9:41 PMGenet fo show.
I think it's interesting how so many different types of people enjoy the same author.
"like, are we all same age, politics, gender, income, education, etc?"
I bet there are certain authors that have a core fan base that is perhaps somewhat similar. Like Tyler Perry en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyler_Perry . I bet alot of people that watch Oprah and read the books she recommends are somewhat similar? But I like to think that all kinds of people love all kinds of authors. Like Cllive Barker for instance. I dont think everyone that loves him is the same at all. Nor Anne Rice. Or Jim Keith for that matter. These are just some faves off the top of my head that I'm most certain have a huge variety of fans / readers. -

Re: What do you like to read?
Wed, October 1, 2008 - 9:19 PMI would have to agree, Mr M. When you love to read anything and everything you tend to be very broadminded.
I love,King,Rice and Knootz, but I am not opposed to reading N.Sparks who is in a totally different genra. -
-
Re: What do you like to read?
Wed, October 1, 2008 - 9:25 PMI'll read pretty much anything. I just need to make more time for it. I used to read WAY more than I do now.

Re: What do you like to read?
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 8:46 AMConspiracy, lies, deceit, and subterfuge. New Jersey State negligance, bias; a legal dilema in which, choices made are not traveled without strong conviction of standard. Did Hollywood have something to do this? -

Re: What do you like to read?
Sun, February 8, 2009 - 8:19 AMLately, I've been reading more of Ian Parker. I found him when I became interested in critical psychology and qualitative theory and now he is into Lacan. He's left poststructural thought behind and I am having a difficult time keeping up.
I've been reading a lot of Continental Philosophy and American Pragmatism, and a little modernism (Toulmin)
I am reading and re-reading some Ken Gergen and it is such a nice change of pace. I find his thoughts challenging , too but also, beautifully stated.
I'm going to re-read some narrative theory next (for a project and presentation).
And I hope to find time to read John Searle, Some old Lakoff and more Rom Harre'.
And oh, some more Foucault and Rorty ...and just a little Derrida.
And I hope some day I understand Heidegger. -
