...that you start reading and they bore you or are not interesting, too slow, not clicking with the writing style?
Do you push your self to finish them?
Do you put them away and come back to them later?
How do you handle it?

Re: What about the books...
Sun, February 8, 2009 - 3:13 PMSometimes I just don't read them, because if the first two chapters don't grab me I get bored.
Sometimes I set them aside because I am not in the mood for what is going on in the novel and try a little later.
I tried reading the new book by Alice Sebold, she wrote Lovely Bones, which was upsetting but very good. This one is, The Almost Moon, and the first [paragraph kind of makes you realize this is no ordinary read. The book was too upseting for me to continue. I will not finish it.

Re: What about the books...
Mon, February 9, 2009 - 10:32 AMDepends on the writer. Dostoyevsky, for example, can be a bit trying at first, but once I get the rhythm and style of the writing I can settle in. Murakami, on the other hand, the tone of his novels I find incredibly tedious, I've never made it through one of his novels. -

Thu, February 12, 2009 - 8:42 PMbut once I get the rhythm>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
Sometimes I read certain books just for that rhythm.
There are books i pick up for the peace I need at at a
particular time. Tony Hillerman is one of the authors who does that for me.
I pick up one of his books when I need to slow down in my head.
Even though they are usually mysteries of a sort, they are written
in the Navajo Indian way. Which is very calming to me.
It takes me a few pages to slow down.... and then I am there.
I use other authors at other times for other reasons. -

If in doubt, toss that book
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 7:13 PMI was in this phase of "hook me in two paragraphs...or that's the end of this".
after reading a really popular, excessively violent book for violence sake....
This approach of lay it down, ended after reading Vanity Fair. It took me exactly 100 pages to get interested in it and then I WAS HOOKED!
So now I'll give it a page or two, if I'm just having a look at a book. or a 100 or 2 if someone (with excellent reading taste) recommends it.
I know people/readers that will read to the end, even though the book is...bad! Life's too short, and there are way too many great books! -

Re: If in doubt, toss that book
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 8:40 PMOnly a couple that I've not finished. I keep them 'round as my mind and mood changes sometimes over time allows me to get into something I originally didn't. I think I've mentioned 'The Voyeur' by Robbe-Grillet before. It's more than just creepy and seedy, it feels an uncomfortably close extension of the writer's own psyche. Off putting to the mind more than the eyes. Some day perhaps.

Re: What about the books...
Mon, February 9, 2009 - 2:51 PMI put them down, sometimes return to them, but often just ignore them from that point on. -

Re: What about the books...
Thu, February 12, 2009 - 7:23 PMIt's not often that I don't finish a book.
I push on and usually I am rewarded
But there have been times
I was just so disappointed that I felt like
putting the book in our wood chipper.

Re: What about the books...
Thu, February 12, 2009 - 8:25 PMI have taken a few books back to the book store.
One book started off with child porn in it.
It felt creepy to read, kinda sicken so I took it back. -

Me too, I think that’s partly couse I chose books very carefully, so im usually satisfied with what im reading. But if some book seemed intresting, and it starts to get boring, or loose its course, I push it for a while but if its not getting back on the tracks I stop reading it.
I really don’t like that, but I figure whats the point of reading it im not enjoying
